Curling began in Scotland in the 1500's. The oldest know curling stone bears the date 1511. The first club in Canada was the Royal Montreal Curling Club, Montreal Quebec, founded in 1807. The first club in The United States was the Orchard Lake Curling Club, Orchard Lake Michigan, founded in 1832. The first Canadian National Championship was held in 1927. The first US Championship was held in 1957. The first World Championship was held in 1958. A curling sheet is 146 feet or 44.5 meters from board to board. The maximum weight of a curling stone is 44 pounds or 20 kilograms. Curling ice is pebbled, not smooth like skating ice. The pebbling is what allows a stone to curl. Curling is also called "The Roaring Game" for the sound the stones make moving over the ice. Curling become an official Olympic sport at the 1998 games in Nagano, Japan.
